A battle between good and evil… Orcs & Goblins versus the Empire.

I have been wanting to do a battle report for a while. When Brad and I got together with some friends to play One Page Rules Regiments, we decided to do my first battle report. Both Brad & I had fully painted armies, and I happened to have my crappy digital camera. I was able to capture some truly bad nostalgic looking pictures. A glorious battle between Orcs (played by Brad) and Empire (played by me, Steve) unfolded.
For those who aren’t aware, Regiments is OPR’s answer for “simple” rank & flank tabletop wargaming. The game is played with alternating activations between units. I’ve really fallen in love with the game over the last few months, and have completely ignored the fact that Old World has been released. But don’t let the name One Page Rules fool you. The game is one of those “easy to learn but difficult to master”. The strategy that goes into a game is really great once you start digging into it.
The rules for OPR Regiments are free, and can be found here, along with free army builders. They have just about every army you could think of represented in their rosters, and there’s very minimal restrictions on combining different factions together. Giving you freedom to make lists of all kinds.
The Forces
Sir Sigmund’s
City Defense

” Broken Lances & Black Powder Burns “
I’ve always thought the Empire in Warhammer Fantasy Battle were so cool. The forces of man scraping by as much as they can, in a world that seems to not be meant for them. When skeletal hordes lead by vampires, green skin brutes and the forces of chaos are running around, what chance does man have? The concept was always very enticing. Their models and how they were presented was a huge drive. Blackpowder rifles, cannons, and a damn steam tank! I also really loved the look of Bretonnian’s with their colors & heraldry. So this army is a little bit of the two mixed together. The giant fits in because I got a screaming deal on some Albion giants, and the idea of a Giant that works for the empire is sick!
I had finished painting 98% of the army the day before this game took place, and did the final 2% moments before putting the models on the table. It really was such a pleasure to see game board filled with only painted models & scenery.
“Sigmund von Albrecht summoned his forces. Scouts, Riflemen, Halberdiers, and Spearmen rally under his banner. A group of engineers from Nuln have been conscripted to aid Sigmund. The great steam tank Unbreakable has been under his command to defend the city. Despite this great force – with the green tide swelling outside the walls of the city, he knew he needed help. The Moonlit Knights from the Twilight Keep answered their call for aid, and Sigmund himself lead their charge.“

Big Z’s Orc Mob

” DA GREEN TIDE COMIN’ “
Brad had this to say about his very unique, mostly metal, Kev Adams sculpts army: “It’s Kev’s world and I’m just living in it”.
“The history of this army begins with Boss Dubsword (Orc boss with standard), his mystical advisor Hoozbad (mob leader on boar with Caster (2) and the small warband under their command. During their rampage around the badlands they encountered Big Z with his boyz who promptly challenged Dubsword for lead of the warband. This scuffle resulted in Big Z becoming da boss and Dubsword hoisting the warband’s new standard. As this waagh in progress swelled in size with the taming of more badlands boars, Big Z found himself with a hefty purse of gold. Hoozbad had the brilliant idea to hire some nasty contractors and with a little more gold convinced them to rustle up a number of ill tempered trolls and a gigantic crossbow. Big Z has grown bold and began striking at human outposts on the edges of the Empire.“

The Set Up & Deployment
The scenario was straight forward. We used the one from the basic Regiments page. D3+2 objective markers were placed outside our 12” deployment zones. You have to stand on an objective marker, while not being contested by an enemy model at the end of the turn to secure the objective. Once the objective is secured, you may move away from it. I won the roll off, and we had to place 5 objectives total. I placed 3 objectives, Brad placed 2. Despite the objective markers, my main goal was to keep those damn green skins away from the wall of the city. I was determined to have no orcs within 12” of the wall at the end of the game.
We took turns alternating deployment of units until all models were down. Brad had his sneaky Goblin Assassins set up in ambush to come in a later turn, and I had my unit of Mounted Scouts start the game off aggressively.

Turn 1
Starting off the game, the Mounted Scouts moved up and fired at the Orc Shootas, killing 1. The Shootas return fire on cavalry killing 4 of the Scouts. The Scouts fail their Moral check and are Shaken!
The Riflemen returned fire at the Shootas, killing 5 more boys.
Boss Dubsword and his mob moved up the field to try and secure some ground at the tower.
The Spearmen moved up to lay the anvil for the rest of the game.
The engineers fired their Repeater Cannon at Dubswords Mob, killing 2 boys.
Da Big mob charge the Spearmen. The spearmen counter killing a boy, but Da Mob kills 1 Spearmen in return.
The Big Shoota lobs a large spear but it misses its mark.
Da Blue & Green Trolls move up the field. Sir Sigmund, the Moonlit Knights cavalry and Footknights move to meet them in open ground. The great giant Grom lumbers his way towards the green skins.
Unbreakable fires it’s main cannon at Da Blue Trolls and injures one. The engineer fires his personal repeater rifle at Da Mob and kills an orc.
The menacing Black Orcs & Big Z make their way up the field.
The Halberdiers charge Hoozbad and his boar riders and kill 3 of the mounted green skins. Hoozbad, in a fit of rage and excitement at the battle retaliates by casting Burst and kills 3 halberdiers with his foul magic.
At the end of Turn 1; Empire holds 2 Objectives, Orcs hold 1.

Turn 2

Brad was the first to finish activating last turn, so he goes first. Brad starts the turn by charging his Shootas into the last remaining Scout, but they manage to deflect the attack.
The Riflemen set their sights on Dubswords & his boys and kill 5 orcs.
Dubsword retaliates and charges the Riflemen, and wipes out the entire unit from full strength!
Hoozbad attempts to cast a spell but fails. He leads his boar boys in a charge against the Halberdiers killing 3 of them. The Halberds manage to kill 2 of the boar boys.
The Repeater Cannon fires a volley against Dubswords Mob, killing 3 boys.
Big Z and his Black Orcs move up. Grom takes a large step back to make room for the Knights to move in against Dubsword.
The Moonlit Knights charge Dubsword and his mob. The mob broke under the weight of their charging hooves & great weapons. Unit wiped out!
Unbreakable sets its sights on Big Z & his Black Orcs, killing 2 of the heavy orcs.
The Halbardiers lead the charge again against Hoozbad and his Ripsnortaz. They manage to just barely slay the remaining boar boy and the vile shaman. Unit wiped out!
The Big Shoota lobs another large spear and misses.
Da Big Mob charges the block of spearmen, but the spearmen counter and kill 3 more of the orcs. The orcs swing and miss their assault. The Spearmen putting them on their backfoot.
The Spearmen counter charge the mob. With a lucky roll and the orcs poor moral, the unit is wiped!
At the end of Turn 2; Empire holds 2 Objectives, Orcs hold 1.

Turn 3

Da Sneaky Gits come into the game and Ambush the back lines. The canon is targeted and destroyed!
Big Z and his remaining Black Orcs charge the Twilight Knights, killing 5 of them. The Knights manage to kill 4 black orcs, leaving Big Z with 1 Black Orc in his fight against the Knights.
The Spearmen wheel and charge Da Blue Trolls on their flank, killing 1.
The Shootas finally kill the Scout and secure the objective.
The few remaining Halberdiers charge Da Green Trolls on flank, but the trolls take no damage.
Da Green Trolls ignore the Halberdiers and move up the field to support Big Z.
The Moonlit Knights charge Big Z, but his armor prevailed and he lived!
Unbreakable shoots at the Black Orcs and Da Green Trolls, Killing Big Z’s last Black Orc, and damaging Trolls. It then Turns its sights on the Assassins and crushes them beneath its wheels!
Grom sees a fight brewing and moves up to take part.
Da Blue Trolls charge The Spearmen, killing 3 of them.
The Orcs Big Shoota targets the Halberds and misses.
The Moonlit Footknights contest the Tower Objective.
At the end of Turn 3; Empire holds 2 Objectives, Orcs hold 0.

Turn 4

Da Green Trolls rampage into the Moonlit Knights, devouring the last 5 of them. Sir Sigmund lives!
The Moonlit Footknights charge Big Z and finally bring him down! Ending the Boss’ reign of terror, and securing the Tower Objective.
The Big Shoota misses its final volley.
The Spearmen have an incredible attack roll and they manage to kill Da Blue Troll in a final charge!
Grom charges the Shootas and makes short work of the last of them, and securing an Objective.
Unbreakable fires its cannon and misses with the last of its ammunition. It attempts to mow them down with its iron bulk, but they manage to halt it with brute force! An unstoppable force meets an immovable object.
At the end of Turn 4; Empire holds 4 Objectives, Orcs hold 0.

Victory for the Empire!
This was such a fun game and it was a thrill to see so many fully painted models fighting across the battlefield. The empire stood against the tide of evil on this day, and won. Big Z and his forces were cut down and repelled back to where they came. This won’t be the last we see of Big Z and his Mob. Grom says “let ’em come” !
